Malcolm Gladwell describes thin-slicing as the main topic of his bestselling book “Blink”.  Thin-slicing is an interesting concept and the term is most frequently used in philosophical and psychological areas.  What is thin-slicing?  Well basically it is the capacity of people to unconsciously identify patterns in experience based on very brief times when it occurred.  In other words, brief slices of experience unconsciously reveal a pattern of behavior to the observer.

Why is this important when we discuss life growth strategies?  One of the concepts covered here is the idea of intuitive knowing and thin-slicing would seem to indicate that some of what we call intuition is based upon experience – even if we do not realize it.

Although it is a valuable concept thin-slicing does not fully explain intuition.  Many Christians dismiss the concept of intuition as something relegated to psychics and unredeemed man.  I personally think this is a simplistic response born more of fear than the leading of the Lord.  Proverbs 14:12 in the Bible states: There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death.  Closer examination will reveal that this is talking about reasoning and the rational aspects of the mind and not intuition.

Intuition is a capacity that God has given to mankind for a purpose related to His plan for us.  This verse from Job 38:36, “Who has put wisdom in the mind? Or who has given understanding to the heart”? is translated, “Who gives intuition to the heart and instinct to the mind”? in the New Living Translation.  This latter translation seems to more fully reveal the gist of what is being said.

Someone once asked, “how do you know God is real?” and my response was something like, “I don’t know I just know”.  In my opinion faith is intuitive.  If you will open yourself to the possibility you will find that God is real.

Thought and Character – James Allen

The aphorism, “As a man thinketh in his heart so is he,” not only embraces the whole of a man’s being, but is so comprehensive as to reach out to every condition and circumstance of his life. A man is literally what he thinks, his character being the complete sum of all his thoughts.

As the plant springs from, and could not be without, the seed, so every act of a man springs from the hidden seeds of thought, and could not have appeared without them. This applies equally to those acts called “spontaneous” and “unpremeditated” as to those, which are deliberately executed.

Act is the blossom of thought, and joy and suffering are its fruits; thus does a man garner in the sweet and bitter fruitage of his own husbandry.

“Thought in the mind hath made us, What we are

By thought was wrought and built. If a man’s mind

Hath evil thoughts, pain comes on him as comes

The wheel the ox behind….

…If one endure

In purity of thought, joy follows him

As his own shadow-sure.”

Here is a guest article about getting what you really want in life.

Get What You Want in 7 Powerful Steps
By Igor Griffiths

In most of my previous articles we have discussed improvement tips in business but today let’s talk about some tips which you may need initially.

Your daily office routine is not giving you any profitable outcome. Instead someone else is taking advantage of your ideas. You think and they earn! Is that acceptable to you? Why do you not you start thinking for yourself and your earnings? You will think this way when you know you are no longer satisfied with your current job and want to achieve success soon. You know your current income will never lead you to where you want to reach.

If you want to analyze your position and decide whether you want to enter into this business or not; this is the right time. Just have a look at your weekly pay check and let your heart speak openly. So, you want to change your and your loved one’s lives for the better; this is the time to start.

The only reason many could not reach to this level is their lack of confidence. They were unable to listen to their hearts. The utmost requirement is to make yourself confident that you are capable of making impossible possible. Ask your heart, what you want from life and get ready to achieve it.

You must agree your mind, once your heart is ready for the job. Give it some time, grab a pen and a pad and write what you think.

The first step is that you must know exactly what you want. One must be as sure in one’s desires as their own heart beat. Remember once you start your ride, there will be no turning back. You can lower your speed; you can accelerate but you can’t apply the brakes. If you do, you will be one of those who were not certain about their destination (passion) and lose their track.

So, before starting your ride, make sure you are confident enough. If you’re a bit confused and aren’t sure what you really want in life answer these questions:

  1. What makes your heart beat with excitement?
  2. What are you constantly thinking of day and night?
  3. What makes you happy?
  4. What do you want to do with the rest of your life?
  5. What are your obsessions?
  6. What do you enjoy doing?
  7. What things make you jump for joy?

Answer these questions with your heart. Then highlight the important points. Now read these points and ask yourself if you really want these dreams to come true. Remember to listen to your heart only if you want to be a happy person. I know it is not considered a practical thing but it is an ideal one. If you get what your heart wants, I am sure your brain would never reject it. Do not listen to people; they might be jealous. Focus on what you really want.

You may be one of those lucky people who do not have to wait for their retirement to own a home or fulfill any other deep desire. You can pass a good future to your kids too. All you need is to make a firm decision and consider your real priority. Keep in mind you have only this one life. Do not make a day passed a day wasted; earn it to its full.

Remember, as you grow older, you’ll find the only things you regret are the things you didn’t do.
